AT CRAIN REALTY WE ARE OFTEN ASKED, BY NEWCOMERS TO THE AREA "WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN MCCURTAIN COUNTY OKLAHOMA?" BELOW ARE JUST SOME OF THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT WE ENJOY AND ALL ARE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES DRIVE FROM IDABEL.
HIKE TRAILS WIND AROUND cold, clear ripples and falls on Mt. Fork River. Fishermen spin the early morning coves of Broken Bow and Pine Creek Lakes with mists rising from lake water as it hits crisp AIR. Hip deep in the cold current of Evening Hole, sport trout fisherpersons try to out fox the wily rainbow.
Red Slough (wildlife preserve south of Idabel) and National Wildlife Refuge (wildlife preserve south of Broken Bow) are awash with color as migrating birds put on a show. Birders with spotting scopes in overlook towers await twilight as flocks roost. Designed for birders, Red Slough is the newest tourist attraction in McCurtain County. Species of waterfowl and waterflora abound in dammed tributaries of Red and Little Rivers forming shallow lakes teeming with forage for migrating water birds. Some species winter over in the lush vegetation and mild climates. You can really add to your bird life list with a field trip here in fall or early spring.
Students are able to complete 4 year, plus advanced degree, college: Southeastern Oklahoma State University - Idabel Campus. www.se.edu/mccurtain. Kiamichi Vo-Tech www.okktc.org offers a variety of continuing ed courses and technical training skills.
Little Dixie Transit, public transportation, will come to homes and businesses to transport persons who cannot, or prefer not to, drive.
We have a vibrant business community with active and vital civic clubs, schools with high academic standards and a variety of athletic and music programs. There is even a school robotics team with NASA backing. www.idabelps.org
Our Medical community is expanding with a several million dollar renovation to McCurtain Memorial Hospital to include out patient clinics and after hours services. And now the plans are in the works for a new rehab center. New to the hospital is a stroke/cardiac center that specializes in early treatment of life saving, state of the art medicines and treatment for stroke victums.
We have a Museum of the Red River dedicated to preserving the cultures of the world. An extensive collection of ancient ceramics, textiles, clothing and artifacts are on display in rotating galleries. A dinosaur dug up right here in McCurtain County is in an awesome display room of its own. There are weaving classes, pottery, paper making, jewelery making, photography quilting, beading and a variety of hands on things to do scheduled throughout the year. There are children's programs taught by two retired teachers (both have 30 years teaching experience and both have masters degrees in early childhood education). They have more energy and enthusiasm than the kids.
Travels around the world are sponsored by the Museum. They have tripped together to the great wall of China, Peru, Brazil, the Amazon delta and other exotic destinations to study cultures around the world. This November they went to the great museums of Europe in England, France and Spain. Currently the Museum is one of the sponsors of an important dig in the mountains of Chili. The trips are open to the public to go along for the greatest adventure of your life. School kids, couples, retirees and singles say they have formed a common bond as they traipsed around the world together on a Museum of the Red River Trip.
The Museum hosts local events from wedding receptions to banquets to community meetings. The Mary H. Herron Community Convention Center is now completed. There is plenty of room for conventions and seminars bringing folks together from all across the world. Looking for that special gift? You won't believe those special gifts found in the Museum Gift Shop, from out of print collectible books, Native American ceramics and jewelry, to blown glass necklaces as well as educational board games and toys. www.museumoftheredriver.org Now featured is a neat exhibit of Christmas trees sponsered by the local civic groups and business community.
